Auschwitz: Not Long Ago, Not Far Away - September 25,

For the first time,74 years after the liberation of Auschwitz, a traveling exhibition dedicated to the historical significance of the camp will be presented to a U.S. audience. The exhibit will arrive in New York City after a very successful run at Madrid's Arte Canal Exhibition Centre, where it was extended two times and drew more than 600, 000 visitors. The exhibition explores the dual identity of the camp as a physical location and as a symbol of the borderless manifestation of hatred and human barbarity.

The exhibit features more than 700 original objects and 400 photographs, the New York presentation of the exhibition will allow visitors to experience artifacts from the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum on view for the first time in North America including hundreds of items that belonged to survivors and victims. Auschwitz; Not Long Age, Not Far Away traces the development of Nazi ideology and tells the transformation of Auschwitz from an ordinary Polish town known as Oswiecim to the most significant Nazi site of the Holocaust.

The Museum has incorporated into the exhibition more than 100 rare artifacts from its collection that relay the experience of survivors and liberators who found refuge in the greater New York area. It includes such items as visas issued by Chiune Sugihara a Japanese diplomat often referred to as "Japan's Oskar Schindler." A documentary film of his work was presented at FSML two years ago. The exhibit also includes tickets for passage on the St. Louis. A passenger who was on the ship as a baby was our speaker at a Shalom breakfast a few years ago. The exhibit includes many items to numerous to mention in this notice.

This trip will take place on Wednesday, September 25, 2019. The bus will leave FSML at 9:00 AM. The cost for this trip, including admission, is $40 per person. If you wish to participate, place your check, made out to FSML Shalom Club(memo-Museum), in the Shalom drawer in the lobby starting May 9, 2019. Space will be awarded on a first come, first serve basis. If we are oversold on that date a management supervised lottery will be held. The guided tour will last 90 minutes. Lunch is available on your own at the Museum and in nearby restaurants.
