Mags Animal Group Services Collection
Monday, January 13th, 2020, All Day Event at Lobby

For the Love of Animals

MAGS, Metedeconk Animal Group Services, is happy to announce
we will again be having a collection box in the clubhouse lobby
from Monday, January 13th to Saturday, February 1st. This is a
very critical time for the Jackson Animal Shelter. Their donations
are low but their needs are high.
We are asking for pet food, both dry and canned, pet treats
and cat litter. Also, new pet bedding, collars, leads and toys.
Anything that will make a pet smile!

Your help is greatly needed at this time. The proceeds from this collection
will go to the Northern Ocean County Animal Facility in Jackson for their
animals on site. They will also distribute food to the foster families of the
shelter animals. Many local families also come to the shelter for food
and other items. The balance is sent to the Jackson Food Pantry.

You can see just how far your donations go. Your generosity is greatly
appreciated by the Animal Shelter and all the little cats and dogs.

We do this for the love of animals.

55PLUS MEETING ANNOUNCEMENT

"In The Ruins of Constitutional Government"

Kim Lane Scheppele, Professor of Sociology and International Affairs, Princeton University
Date: January 16, 2020;  meeting # 602
Topic: In the Ruins of Constitutional Government
Speaker: Kim Lane Scheppele, Laurance S. Rockefeller Professor of Sociology and International Affairs in the Woodrow Wilson School and in the University Center for Human Values at Princeton University
Around the world, democratic citizenries are electing leaders who proceed to dismantle previously existing constitutional constraints on the power of the executive.  From Hungary and Poland, to Venezuela and Ecuador, to Turkey and Russia, and perhaps even to the United States, democratically elected leaders are eschewing checks and balances and rejecting independent judiciaries, media and civil society.  These new autocratic leaders appear wildly popular and are often reelected.  Why have democratically elected leaders with autocratic aspirations appeared across such a wide array of democratic governments at once? How have they undermined constitutional government and yet claimed democratic legitimacy? And what can be done to restore the promise of constitutionalism?
Professor Kim Lane Scheppele is the Laurance S. Rockefeller Professor of Sociology and International Affairs in the Woodrow Wilson School and the University Center for Human Values at Princeton University.  From 2005-2015, she was Director of the Program in Law and Public Affairs at Princeton.  Scheppele's work focuses on the intersection of constitutional and international law, particularly in constitutional systems under stress.  Her many publications in law reviews, in social science journals and in many languages cover these topics and others.  Scheppele is an elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the International Academy of Comparative Law.  In 2014, she received the Law and Society Association's Kalven Prize for influential scholarship.  During 2017-2019, she was the elected President of the Law and Society Association.

Wine Club's January Tasting
Tuesday, January 21st, 2020, 7pm to 10pm at Clubhouse Ballroom & Veranda
Greetings All and Happy 2020!

Hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season – it sure went by fast!  Also hope everyone is ready to begin tasting and partying again – our first tasting of 2020 is Tuesday, January 21st       Our focus for January will be on getting ready for Valentine’s Day with a focus on  “bubbles and delectable edibles.” Joyce DeSiena and Bill Hybbeneth selected for the wines we will sample – both those with “bubbles” and those without.  The wines range in price from $10.99 to $22.99, and a couple are not discountable.

We will vary our typical format for this evening  –  folks will directly enter the Ballroom for their name badges and raffle ticket – and then find their tables. The tables will be set for 8 places each and there is no assigned seating  –  you are encouraged to “mix and mingle” and welcome newcomers to our group. Please do remember to bring your WINE GLASSES with you for this tasting – wine does taste so much better in a glass than a plastic cup!

The cost for this tasting will be $20 per person, and checks should be made payable to FSML – Wine Club with the notation January in the memo line, and placed in the  Wine Club lockbox #27  located in the Clubhouse Lobby NO LATER THAN Thursday, January 16th  PLEASE.  This ensures we have enough food and places set for everyone attending.

We will start the evening at 7PM – and doors will be open at 6:45PM. Tom Mitchell will be our speaker for this tasting.

If you have any questions, please email me at carole@caobrien.com or Joyce DeSiena at jds0506@yahoo.com

See you on the 21st!

Wishing you the best,
Carole
